# Using AI with Xojo (Agentic Mode)

Xojo's Agentic Mode lets you build your app together with an AI coding agent, such as Claude, Codex, Gemini or Muse. Instead of writing all the code yourself, you describe what you want and the agent edits your project directly, with Xojo picking up the changes as it works.

## Starting a new project in Agentic Mode

1. Launch Xojo. The Project Chooser window appears.
2. Choose the type of project you want to build: Desktop, Web, iOS, Android or Console.
3. Check the **for AI (Agentic Mode)** box.
4. Enter your Application Name and click **Create**.
5. Save your project when prompted.

Xojo creates the project in the text-based Xojo Format and adds instruction files that teach your agent how to work with Xojo projects. That's all the setup Xojo needs. From there, point your AI agent at the project folder and tell it what to build.

## Using Agentic Mode with an existing project

You can also switch an existing project to Agentic Mode by choosing **File \> Agentic Mode**. The project must already be saved in Xojo Format (the text format), since that is the format AI agents can read and edit.

Saving a project in Xojo Format requires a Xojo license.

Once a project is in Agentic Mode, it remembers the setting. The next time you open the project, it's still in Agentic Mode.

## How it works

When a project is in Agentic Mode, Xojo keeps instruction files (`AGENTS.md` and `XOJO-CODING.md`) in the project folder. These teach your AI agent Xojo's code conventions, where the documentation is, and how to work with the project files.

As the agent edits your project files, Xojo notices the changes and automatically reloads those items. Each reload is listed in the Messages pane, so you can review everything it does the moment it happens. You don't need to do anything; you can just watch your project take shape in the IDE, and jump in yourself whenever you like.

The agent can also run your project. If the run produces errors, the agent can see them and attempt to fix them itself, then run again. If it needs to see what's on your screen to resolve an issue, you can give it access. It will ask for your permission first; the exact permissions vary by OS.

You stay in the loop the whole time: run the app yourself at any point, make changes by hand in the IDE, and keep prompting the agent.

While in Agentic Mode, if you want to rename, move or delete the folder your project is in, or change the name of your project, close the project first. If the project's folder is changed or removed while Xojo is in Agentic Mode, an error appears in the Message Log and Agentic Mode is turned off.
